NASA RELEASES NEW IMAGE SHOWING 'SPIDERS' CRAWLING ON THE SURFACE OF MAR

At first look, an image captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter seems to feature spider-like objects crawling over the surface of Mars. The image, which was clicked on 13 May 2018 and released on Friday, actually shows a unique phenomenon that has little to do with spiders.

The picture shows a carbon dioxide ice cap covering a region on the Red Planet and as the sun returns in the spring, the "spiders" appear to emerge from the landscape.
The phenomenon, which happens when CO2 below Mars’ surface warms in the spring and changes from solid to gas, leads to spider-like radiating mounds on the surface and is called "araneiform terrain".

"The word 'araneiform' means 'spider-like'. There are radially organised channels on Mars that look spider-like, but we don't want to confuse anyone by talking about 'spiders' when we really mean 'channels,' not bugs," NASA said.
"Over time, the trapped carbon dioxide gas builds in pressure and is eventually strong enough to break through the ice as a jet that erupts dust. The gas is released into the atmosphere and darker dust may be deposited around the vent or transported by winds to produce streaks. The loss of the sublimated carbon dioxide leaves behind these spider-like features etched into the surface," a NASA release said.
This active seasonal processhowever, is not seen on Earth, NASA said, while comparing the process to the sublimation of dry ice on Earth.

New rule allows deportation if H-1B extension is rejected

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Many H-1B holders could face deportation if their application for extension or change of status is rejected
  • They may have to stay on in the US for several months, waiting to be heard by an immigration judge
  • Notices for commencement of deportation proceedings were restricted to criminal cases but the ambit now stands widened

MUMBAI: Many
H-1B visa
holders could find themselves facing deportation proceedings if their application for a visa extension or change of status has been rejected and the tenure of stay granted originally by the US authorities (as reflected in Form 1-94) has expired. To make matters worse, despite no longer holding on to a job, they would have to stay on in the US for several months, waiting to be heard by an immigration judge.

A policy memorandum, dated June 28, which came into the public domain last week, permits the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to issue “notices to appear” (NTA) in cases “whereupon denial of an application or petition, the applicant is ‘unlawfully present’ in the US”. Such a notice is the starting point for removal or deportation proceedings.

According to an immigration counsel at an IT company, “It appears that all cases where an application for visa extension is denied, post expiry of the original tenure of stay that was granted, will be issued an NTA.”

Notices for
commencement of deportation proceedings
were restricted to cases relating to fraud, criminal charges or denial of asylum or refugee status, but the ambit now stands widened.

On being served notices to appear (NTA), the nightmare begins. “Once an NTA has been served, the individual must remain in the US and appear before an immigration judge. A failure to appear for removal proceedings carries a five-year ban on re-entry to the US,” says Snehal Batra, managing attorney, NPZ Law Group.
Earlier, on being denied an
H-1B
extension, the employee concerned could immediately return to India without the NTA-related hassles. His employers could reapply for a fresh H-1B in the next season.

“Even international students are not immune to deportation proceedings. Unauthorised employment, failure to enrol in classes or failure on part of the educational institute to update a student’s records could result in an unlawful status for students and issue of a NTA,” adds Batra.

Angelique Kerber stuns Serena Williams to win maiden Wimbledon title

LONDON: Angelique Kerber watched as
Serena Williams return crashed into the net at match point. She then buried her face in the palm of her hands before falling to the turf to celebrate a sparkling triumph at the All England Club.

The superstar American had been scripting a fairytale charge at SW19 this fortnight. It's the feel-good story of the year. Coming back from a difficult pregnancy, and 10 months after giving birth to daughter Olympia, she was in a major final after just 13 matches. But while the tennis world wired into the Williams' epic, Kerber refused to be caught in the web. The 30-year-old, weaving her own dreams, clinched the
Wimbledon title, lifting the Venus Rosewater dish for the first time.
Kerber, who won the Australian and US Opens in 2016, after which she became the oldest first-time No.1, swept to the title at Church Road with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Her performance in the final mirrored the effective quality of automobile engineering her country is celebrated for, the German had no more than five unforced errors in the 65-minute title clash.

Kerber, who climbed up to her box to celebrate with new coach Wim Fissette, called her victory, 'a dream come true'. "I knew I had to play my best match against Serena. This is my second chance to be back in the final. I want to thank my family and my team without you I won't be here. I was trying not to look at my mother, she is always so nervous when I'm playing. I also want to tell Serena that you are a great person and champion. You are an inspiration for all the people watching."

Williams, who was cheered on by the royals Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and her good friend Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, was in tears when she took the microphone.

"I have had such an amazing tournament, I'm really happy to get this far," she said her voice choking. Up in the Royal Box the new Duchess teared up. "I have so much to look forward to. All the moms out there, I played for you and I tried really hard."

The women's final kicked-off two hours past it's scheduled start time as the second men's semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had to be completed. American legend Martina Navratiliova likened the delayed start to a rain break.

The German was quick off the blocks, breaking the American's heavy serve, which had only been busted seven times in the lead-up to the final. The 23-time major winner battled back from 0-2, winning the next three games to take a 3-2 lead and restore order to the title clash. Or so it seemed as Kerber, who is on a comeback herself, after the low of 2017, obviously knew how to play Williams in a major final, having beaten her at that stage earlier. Kerber, who had lost to the superstar across the net from her on this court two years ago, broke again in the seventh game in which Williams double faulted twice and fell behind 0-40. She broke again in the ninth to close out the set.

Kerber's screaming forehands, two of them in the sixth game of the second set, helped the German, who was rolling on well-oiled wheels, to take a 4-2 lead. The 30-year-old, looking for her third major title, did well to hold in the seventh game. Then when serving for the match, she inched ahead 30-15, but Serena swung wildly on her backhand to push to 30-all. Kerber pressed to match point with a forehand she managed to send deep, one match point was all that the 11th seed needed on the day.

Kerber took home 2,250,000 pounds and 2000 ranking points for her superlative run this week. While the 36-year-old, playing her 10th final at SW19, received 1,125,00 pounds for her work.
